December Daily 2010 | Day Four
Tags:Welcome to Day Four.
Today I'm mixing things up by adding 4, 4x6 photos. To include them in the album I adhered two back to back and punched holes (2 holes). I use rolling adhesive to adhere them together. More images below.
Adhering photos back to back is a great way to include more photos into minibooks.
I started Day Four with another 6x8 photo - I might just keep doing that all the way through and I might not. Right now they are making me really happy.
The word art on the photo is from my December Sentiment Strips package at Designer Digitals.
Here's a look at that first 4x6 photo. Along the side is a 1/2 a cute little circle from Bananafish Studio.
The back photo is one of Simon in the car. Love. The pen I used is another from that same set of Pitt Artist metallic pens from Faber-Castell.
A look at the spread:
On to the other side of the transparent paper:
Close up of the second set of 4x6 photos:
And the back side of this 4x6:
This 4x6 uses the other half of the circle accent from the first 4x6.
You might also noticed that I oriented one set of 4x6 photos with the top two holes and the other set with the bottom two holes. I like the balance that gives to the book.
Journaling went onto a photo again. Simple and easy. Paper along the bottom is from the Anna Griffin Georgette Cardstock pack.
A closer look:
JOURNALING : It’s hard to pass up a chance to visit the snow. Katie & Peter met us at our house around 7am and we started the hour or so drive up to Willamette Pass. The plan was to see the snow, do a bit of sledding, hang out for just awhile and then come back home for the Oregon v. Oregon State football game. It was Anna’s first time to the mountains and she did better than I thought with the cold. I carried her a bit but she also wanted to walk and check things out. Simon was in heaven. He loves the snow and could have stayed up there much longer than we did - this might be the year to get him on some skis. Both Chris I and remember how much we liked being in the mountain snow as kids - the awesome quiet, riding the chair lift, the speed coming down. I’m totally hoping this is the first of many more trips up there this season.

I'm not sure if you noticed or not, but there is a small typo in the journaling. When you said Simon was in heaven, the next sentence starts as her instead of he. I am doing my first December Daily this year and am loving it!

Thank you for letting me know - I adjusted it here.

Do you know where I can upload my dec daily templates and have them printed in 6x8? I have a cannon pixma ip4200 and for some reason when I print from photoshop elements the color is all wrong. Thanks. You taught me how to do hybrid scrapping with your tutorials and I can't bear the thought of not being able to incorpotate my new skills!

I don't know of a specific place that prints 6x8's. I do know that you can move your 6x8 onto an 8x10 (create a new canvas by going to File/New and entering in 8x10 at 300dpi). Save the 8x10 as a JPG and upload to an online developer. When you get the print then you can cut it down to 6x8.
If you go Ali's route (which is what I would do) you can also add a pair of 4x4 pics to your canvas either for this project or others and not lose the extra photo paper on there. I do this all the time when I want to print off size stuff at the developer. Also, Costco has an awesome price on 8x10's if that is an option for you.
Thank you! I'll try both these suggestions since we have costco up the street
Robyn, Costco also has 8x12, so you could print 2 photos side by side if you create an 8x12 canvas in photoshop :)
Persnickety Prints has 6x8 size photos. Look'em up. The prices are very reasonable, too!

I so love that about the Pacific North West that you don't have to deal with the snow, but you can just drive an hour and have lots!! I hope to visit again there soon. :) I think this is my favorite of your days so far! I love how you used the pink pen that matches Anna's snowsuit! So adorable! Looks like such a fun day!

Between you and Karen Russell, I think that I'm about to move to the PNW. I've never lived west of the Mississippi, or north of GA since I was of driving age. OUGHTA BE INTERESTING!! ;)
TFS. As always, your pages and journaling are just beautiful.

I am new to Photoshop Elements and digital stuff in general - have struggled with this a bit (actually a lot!! so new to it I couldn't even get the photo from iphoto to photoshop elements - that's a problem!! LOL!) but I think I'm catching on - it's been kind of a crash course!! If you know of any elements tutorials for total beginners I would love to see them.
My next obstacle is the quality of my photos - not totally thrilled - I'm using HP Premium Plus Photo Paper (couldn't find the Ilford in my area). Maybe it's the paper - maybe it's the photos. I looked for the Tracey Clark photo tips post but couldn't get the link to come through. Wondering if you can help with this.

Hi Alexandra - have you checked out my series of posts on Getting Started with Digital Scrapbooking? It starts really basic - like downloading, saving, opening files, etc. You can check out that list of posts here: http://aliedwards.com/2010/01/getting-started-digital-scrapbooking.html
One thing to keep in mind with the photos - I know when I first began printing at home I was not super-thrilled with them either (especially when directly compared with something that comes from a developer). Over time I came to decide that for me, I was ok with how they were turning out - they weren't perfect but they were quick and I was able to tell my story more immediately. The quality is different - I had to get used to what came out of the printer.
Also - here's the link to Tracey Clark's Indoor Photo post that appeared here previously: http://aliedwards.com/2008/09/tracey-clark-the-great-indoors.html
I know Ali is an HP fan, but I prefer Epson printers. I think the cost is more for each print, but whether I print on photo paper or matte presentation paper (like cardstock), they look just like the ones from Walgreens to me.
Hi Ali!
Thanks so much for the great reply.
I will be going over the Getting Started with Digital tutorials tonight after the kids go to bed and I've already read through the Tracey Clark info - had my husband read along so that he can help with the photos and maybe get me in the odd one.
I also appreciate your thoughts on printing at home. I like getting the photo printed right away too - I can get used to the difference in quality :)
Thanks again!

I am getting jealous. I knew that doing an all digital Shutterfly album this year was going to be hard, since I love mixing it up and getting my hands dirty. It might be worth it to try and do a mini album for fun.
Replies
You could totally mix it up Jennifer :).

Oh, my Ali! I love your stuff but this little set of pages and pictures are just amazing. So well balanced, love the idea of the 4x6 pictures on top/bottom w/that lovely transparent sheet between. You are knocking this out of the park this year!

Hi Ali!! You are so inspiring, this is my third year doing the daily! I am sure you have mentioned this a million times, but do you print all your pictures at home, if so, what printer do you use? My book would come along a lot faster if I printed at home! I currently print every few days at Costco! Merry Christmas!

Hi Ali, So many of the transparencies that you used are sold out now. Guess that's my lesson to get them early if I think I want to follow along with your designs in the future. You don't know where we might be able to find a few transparencies at this point do you? My local scrapbook store only sold two different designs. I'd like more variety!
Just a suggestion... you might be able to get people to buy kits in the future of your december daily supplies! ;)
Thanks for all you do. I love your design this year, and I really love your snow pics today. Everyone looks so colorful and happy against that lovely snowy background!

Hi Stephanie - most of the transparencies I used are from Hambly. You can order from them directly: http://www.qbaroo.com/HamblyScreenPrints/categories.cfm?type=0&categoryoid=2
Thanks for the kit suggestion - just not sure I want to make that leap (a lot goes into it from the planning/shipping/etc standpoint). I also like encouraging people to get creative with what they might already have at home. That said, I will think about it for next year.

You sure made quick use of the snowsuits you purchased! My kids loved the snow - even if there was a "skiff" they would dress up in ther snowsuits and go out and roll in it it!

Ali,I think at one point you used sharpie paint pens and maybe even sharpies themselves to write on your pictures. Did you switch to the PITT pens b/c sharpies harmed the photos or for some other reason?
Thanks!
Replies
Still love the poster-paint Sharpies. They are hard to find - the white one was my favorite. These were sent to me to test out and have ended up working well.
Is that why I have scoured the internet and can"t find the metallic pitt markers in any color other than silver and gold? They were a sample sent to you? I am a bit of a pen freak and the coverage over the photo was awesome.
