Super Huge Update : No More Diapers
Tags:Now this, my friends, is BIG TIME.
We have been working on this casually for awhile now, not worrying, but encouraging. I woke up on Saturday morning, put on his frog undies on him and annouced, "No more diapers. Don't pee on the frogs." And that was it.
I think he was simply used to the diapers. They were easy. He didn't have to get up and go to the bathroom when he was in the middle of watching Dora. (And seriously, who wants to have to get up when you are watching your favorite show with no commercials?)
Now he announces, "Uh Oh," but it is an advance uh oh, signaling that it is time to pull those pants down and get to the toilet.
Sent him to school this morning in underwear and sweatpants for easy pull down. Excited to see how it goes at school.
Now that is a GREAT Mother's Day present.
One other little Simon story for this lovely Monday. Last Friday we were at the local pizza parlor with some of my girlfriends and their kids. This is one of those places where they have an awesome play room. Parents can sit on one side of the glass and eat and chat and the kids can run like crazy, slide, play in the balls, etc.
We were sitting there chatting when I look up and I see Simon, my dear sweet little dude, holding hands with some sweet little girl. Walking and holding hands, playing and holding hands, him following her and her following him. Seriously was so happy. First to see him connecting with another child, second to see him touching another child that he does not know at all (the little girl was not one of my friend's kids). I went in there to help him with his shoe and then turned around to walk back out - I heard him say, "go on slide." I turned back towards them and watched as they climbed up into the structure together. Melts my heart to see him interacting like that...it is huge.
So basically, Simon rocks.

Oh, Ali, Simon ROCKS big time! What a fantastic Mother's Day you had! My Alex (Asperger's Syndrome) was a very late 'bloomer' with regards to bathroom habits...we worked for 15 months and he was nearly FIVE. But these guys of ours, man, when they decide something, they DO IT. I am so proud of Simon, and so happy for you!
And the socializing...dang, that's cool! What could make a momma feel her heart swell more than seeing such unexpected success in a child?

These are the moments that you breathe and feel peace (i.e. lack of worry) and pure joy that make it all worth it. A moment to be savored.

Hip Hip Hooray for the underwear!!! Let's hope for a DRY week! My grandson is three and we were in the backyard where the kids were playing last week and I mentioned to his mom that it looked like Riley needed to go to the bathroom, so when she insisted he did need to go - he asked her "how do you know I have to go"!!! Well, she said it was the DANCING!!! You know the kind!

that is an awesome Mother's Day gift.
Under our Big Top, the youngest (finally) just got rid of his feeding tube (surgery #9) so we will wait just a bit longer before we get serious.
After 5 kids, I can't wait to say goodbye finally to diapers....at least at home because in the NICU where I work, diapers are forever. LOL

Ali, those are the moments that I just sit down and weep. How incredible to watch our little guys suceed socially. It may not be fair, but I know it moves me more when my son w/AS does this than when my NT child does. I know how much more of a hurdle it is for him than for my 'normal' son. But life isn't fair, and it's not fair that these guys have to work so much harder to acheive that simple interactive element, so I suppose a little extra celebration is in order.
And the potty thing is pretty wonderful too. I never got serious about 'training' either one of them, just let nature take its course, and when I started finding dry diapers in the am, they switched to underwear (Thomas for us). Overall, very easy.
Congrats and thank you for sharing those successes with us.
