Super Huge Update : No More Diapers
Tags:Now this, my friends, is BIG TIME.
We have been working on this casually for awhile now, not worrying, but encouraging. I woke up on Saturday morning, put on his frog undies on him and annouced, "No more diapers. Don't pee on the frogs." And that was it.
I think he was simply used to the diapers. They were easy. He didn't have to get up and go to the bathroom when he was in the middle of watching Dora. (And seriously, who wants to have to get up when you are watching your favorite show with no commercials?)
Now he announces, "Uh Oh," but it is an advance uh oh, signaling that it is time to pull those pants down and get to the toilet.
Sent him to school this morning in underwear and sweatpants for easy pull down. Excited to see how it goes at school.
Now that is a GREAT Mother's Day present.
One other little Simon story for this lovely Monday. Last Friday we were at the local pizza parlor with some of my girlfriends and their kids. This is one of those places where they have an awesome play room. Parents can sit on one side of the glass and eat and chat and the kids can run like crazy, slide, play in the balls, etc.
We were sitting there chatting when I look up and I see Simon, my dear sweet little dude, holding hands with some sweet little girl. Walking and holding hands, playing and holding hands, him following her and her following him. Seriously was so happy. First to see him connecting with another child, second to see him touching another child that he does not know at all (the little girl was not one of my friend's kids). I went in there to help him with his shoe and then turned around to walk back out - I heard him say, "go on slide." I turned back towards them and watched as they climbed up into the structure together. Melts my heart to see him interacting like that...it is huge.
So basically, Simon rocks.

SO funny...aren't these moments just the best?! I just had to tell you, I was perusing your blog and my Abby (she's 5) said, "who was that?" (about Simon) and I said, "his name's Simon." She is totally boy-crazy!! She's like, " oooh...thats a cute name and he's ham-sun (handsome)...I wish Hagen's name was Simon." Hagen is her boyfriend...this week. LOL!

Congratulations on ending the "diaper" stage. I have yet to try to start with my son, and not really looking forward to it. I know he is going to be VERY stubborn about the entire process.
What a sweet story about Simon and his little friend. Thank you for sharing - that really brought a HUGE smile to my face.

Job very well done! I almost did back flips when our son decided that his code word would be, "I'm cold." and that was our cue to hustle him down the hall to the bathroom. They let us know in their own time and space.
So glad to hear Simon will reach out, it makes so much difference in his life and in yours. Our son(6 1/2yrs) picked up a pen a few days ago, a piece of scrap paper and wrote out the letter Z and said, "Look Mom, Z for Zorro!" I cried, flat out cried.
They let us know in their own time and space.
wow.

Girl, I am so with you on that one. That was my mother's day present as well. I hate to even say it outloud because I can't believe it's true. My first daughter took 18 MONTHS and my second, well, only two weeks. At two and a half, this is big. We were very casual about the whole thing. That must mean I'm aging well. Still holding my breath, but letting it out slowly....
here's to no more diapers!
Cheers!

hi Ali I have been reading and lurking for a while now but I love to hear about Simon (and scrapping of course!) and well done to him on his latest milestone! I was wondering how old he is. Also I am really happy that you talk so easily and share your stories of autism as it's great to bring it to so many people because of your superstardom! hah :) I have a nephew (6) with autism and my stepson (14) has aspergers so I always like to hear other people's stories. Also I love the "life artist" thing. Go Ali! :) Jen

Ali... I am constantly renewed by your posts and while I initially came to your site because I am inspired by your work, I stay for the stories such as this one.
When I worked as a full-time journalist I wrote a series of articles about families with autistic children and they were some of the bravest, kindest, most patient people I'd ever met. You clearly would fit in with them perfectly!
Congrats on the potty news and on helping others find big and mini-victories in our own lives.

Having a 30 year old sister who is autistic I can fully understand how proud you are of Simon and his accomplishments. The underwear story is great, but the making friends with the little girl in the play room brought tears to my eyes. Living in this 'life' I can relate to these little things which are really huge things.
Thanks for keeping up involved in your story, your blog always makes me smile when it comes to Simon.

So happy for you! I am the oldest of four children, so I'm familiar with how much diapers can cost. They are crazy expensive.
