Super Huge Update : No More Diapers
Tags:Now this, my friends, is BIG TIME.
We have been working on this casually for awhile now, not worrying, but encouraging. I woke up on Saturday morning, put on his frog undies on him and annouced, "No more diapers. Don't pee on the frogs." And that was it.
I think he was simply used to the diapers. They were easy. He didn't have to get up and go to the bathroom when he was in the middle of watching Dora. (And seriously, who wants to have to get up when you are watching your favorite show with no commercials?)
Now he announces, "Uh Oh," but it is an advance uh oh, signaling that it is time to pull those pants down and get to the toilet.
Sent him to school this morning in underwear and sweatpants for easy pull down. Excited to see how it goes at school.
Now that is a GREAT Mother's Day present.
One other little Simon story for this lovely Monday. Last Friday we were at the local pizza parlor with some of my girlfriends and their kids. This is one of those places where they have an awesome play room. Parents can sit on one side of the glass and eat and chat and the kids can run like crazy, slide, play in the balls, etc.
We were sitting there chatting when I look up and I see Simon, my dear sweet little dude, holding hands with some sweet little girl. Walking and holding hands, playing and holding hands, him following her and her following him. Seriously was so happy. First to see him connecting with another child, second to see him touching another child that he does not know at all (the little girl was not one of my friend's kids). I went in there to help him with his shoe and then turned around to walk back out - I heard him say, "go on slide." I turned back towards them and watched as they climbed up into the structure together. Melts my heart to see him interacting like that...it is huge.
So basically, Simon rocks.

That's awesome about Simon (and Happy Mothers Day too) - seriously, that's how I finally had to potty train Audrey. No more diapers. Took a few accidents for her to figure it out, but she's pottying like a champ now! :)

Hi ali :)
I am still having trouble with Sean's potty training , ugh. He won't go #2 in potty... but alas he is going more and more each day!! He is now 4.5 and I think he is doing GREAT for having autism and all :) thanks for the update on Simon!

hi ali, I really enjoy reading your blog...not just for the scrapbook/life-artist-ness, but also to read about simon and autism. I am a former education major and autism was something we touched on but I didn't really get loads of info about...but it has really perked my interest recently because it seems A LOT of kids are affected. it is so awesome to read your updates on simon! I know how it felt when the kids I mentored made some kind of progress--and I can only imagine the joy you feel as a parent when he takes baby steps or makes strides. simon is lucky--no, blessed--to have parents who are so involved and care SO much about him, his education, and just his world in general. (and seriously I don't mean for this to sound like a kiss-a** post, it just warms my heart b/c I truly love kids) ok, that is all! :-) thanks for sharing your journey with us.

Ali,
You need to meet/talk with my sister. Her son has autism tendicies (sp?) and other issues. We all understand the issue of the kiddo getting bigger physically, but not emotionally...
Let me know if you'd like her e-mail. She knows a lot on the g-free diet and other helpful hints for living with this extra-specila kiddo.
I can picture (when reading your rough-day entry) her Troy laying in the middle of the floor at the grocery store letting people walk over him and just him looking around --like it was normal/fun. Or, feeling bad that he can't eat what the kids can eat...
Your little dude is in our prayers.
Nicole P.
