Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)
Tags:Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:
True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.
Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).
Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wingsby Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."
Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:
I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

I just recently learned to sew and have been doing lots of it. I still love scrapbooking and telling my stories--just have a new love as well!

Lately I have been putting stitches on everything! I love just busting out the sewing machine for my pages. It adds such great texture.

I recently took an acrylic album class and loved stamping on the acrylic with Stazon stamp pads. I used to stamp quite a bit, but got out of the habit -- to much stuff to get out, along with my scrapbook stuff --but now am hoping to get back into stamping a little more on my scrapbook pages and doing another couple of acrylic albums with Christmas themes for my mother and mother in law. Would love to win a copy of this book! Thanks so much!

My favorite technique is using old photos....tintypes, cabinet cards, copying them, cutting them, adding fancy hats and accessories, giving new personalities to my adopted relatives.

My favorite creative technique right now is setting up a project/layout in PhotoShop (with photos and sketches) and then printing them out and re-creating it in paper/traditional scrapping. :)
Saves me lots of time when figuring out what's going to fit. :) My pictures are always the exact size I need them to be. Yay! :)

Hi Ali~
First of all, let me say congratulations on the baby! What a wonderful time for you and your family and especially Simon. I am a special education teacher and I do have to say that you have really done some wonderful things with Simon. What an inspiration you are!
Ok, so the technique that I have been loving is the writing on photos and using overlays. I just love the way that it looks. I love the white writing on the photos. It just somehow make the photo pop! I love it...lots.
I hope you have a wonderful day!
smiles...

I have been trying to incorporate more mixed media (paint, stamping, collaging) into my reflective journal. Something a little less structured than the story writing I do in my scrapbooks. Where I have generally used these techniques seperately, I am now experimenting with how to use them together to convey more of the story...thanks for the book reviews too, I love finding a great new book about the creative process.

Thank you so much for sharing Kelly Rae's book!
My favorite technique lately has been getting back to basics. I've been trying to include simple hand-rendered illustrations along with journaling--less of other people's "stuff" and more of my own. Also, I'd like to get past journaling around photos and actually write a bit ON them like you've done.

I favoirite creative technique is painting. It can be used in such a variety of ways in our scrapbooks that I think it will be something that never turns into a fad.

Congratulations to you and your sister! :)
My favorite right now is paint. I use foam brushes, paint brishes, my fingers. I love mixing colors and seeing what the end result is.

My favourite technique at this moment is using masks, ink washes and rubber stamps, all on the same piece.

I actually have two "favorite" techniques right now, but they both involve capturing everyday moments which to me are the essence of scrapbooking. The first is using lots of photos or creating photo collages on a scrapbooking layout to capture the little details of an event that may otherwise be lost or forgotten. The other favorite technique is creating travel journals--again to capture all of the little events, memories and impressions that would otherwise be forgotten with time.

Thanks for the tips on the new books.
Away for the weekend and again came home with a book full of journaling and simply awaiting the photos from Shutterfly. I love writing my story as it happens and getting creative with only the few supplies you recommend in your book, Life Artist. This is the best scrapbooking idea ever! I am a new woman...thanks, Ali

I've been painting on canvas a lot lately, but I have no training and know no techniques... which is making that second book look pretty enticing! I may have to look on Amazon after I leave this site. :) It's been fun playing around before I delve into the how-tos just to get my own feel for it first. I've always been a digital scrapbooker but am really intersted in mixed media art. Just not sure how to go about it.
