Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)
Tags:Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:
True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.
Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).
Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wingsby Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."
Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:
I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

I've always felt most comfortable with collage techniques, but I've found myself sketching a lot more recently, I think, out of need to find more confidence in myself. I'm learning that I don't have to be able to render what I see perfectly in my sketches. That the process of sketching is more important than how it looks. The confidence this builds in me is helping me to feel less critical about my creative works in general.

Thank you for such a great giveaway. My favorite technique at the moment, is trying to find ways to incorporate fabric into my scrapbooking and cardmaking. I am also just about to try my hand at needle felting which I think would make some cute embellishments for my scrap pages.

Scrapbooking is my true passion. I love to stamp and chaulk and play with pretty paper! I am just starting to attempt one stroke painting on canvas. I'd love to have my own art work on my walls. Thanks for the chance to win a book. They all sound great!

These books look amazing! I just had to jot down the titles so I can try and order one.
Love your art journal pages. I just got into creating them through an online art journal class. I'm really getting into it!
My favorite thing is really just grabbing what ever I have on hand and creating. A little of this and a little of that. My second favorite thing is doodling! I like grabbing my pretty colored pens and making things more "me"!
Thanks for the giveaway! Hope I am one of the lucky two!!

I have recently learned how to do applique quilting and I'm really enjoying being able to take something with me and work on while sitting at the PTA meeting for example. Also refinishing furniture and painting or decoupage.
thanks!

It's not a technique per se, but I've started to dabble in art journaling. So instead of staring at a blank page, I've been painting the pages in my journal. Now, when inspiration strikes, I pick a page I like and journal away!

I haven't been that enthusiastic about stamping but had a wonderful stamping experience making ATC's last week - I think I'll be stamping a lot more in the future.

oh i love this question and this contest/giveaway! they both mirror my recent efforts and practices with my creating: learn from those who have gone before you. follow them and follow your heart as your eXplore.
this has given me sO maNy new lessons in crafting: i'm signing up for mixed-media instruction (one-on-one) this fall, i'm in the ETSY community forums everyday learning from those etsy-savvy folks, i'm letting my partner's advice and encouragement about my crafting (from his point of view) really settle in, i'm taking bits & pieces from here and there and re-creating my means for creating.
i'm always reading kelly rae's blog collecting pieces of inspiration, insight, encouragement, and wisdom. i so adore all of you and the maNy lessons you're teaching. perhaps without even knowing it, you have a sweet little disciple in me.

I'd say mini scrapbooks are my thing lately. They're quick, and they need to be since I don't have much time with 3 kids and a full time job!

My favorite techniques these days are acrylic glaze medium (love the sheerness this stuff gives regular paint so you can layer stuff and still see the bottom layer peeking through and also using this to paint over top patterned paper with words or something simple on it to custom color the paper to go with my layout) and wrinkling up tissue paper and adhering it with decoupage. I either paint it or use colored tissue paper. I've cut letters for titles out of this and shapes and my next ideas is to use this as the background for a cover for a mini book--not sure what the theme will be but I'm making one!

I love to give my art away - whether jewelry, cards, or pastels - it's a thrill to catch someone off guard with an unexpected bauble or card or portrait. I like turning ordinary materials into something beautiful. I am the guardian / caregiver of a special needs adolescent, and art has become a fantastic bond between us. We would love, love to win this book! Thank you!!
