Three Things : Creative Books (+ a giveaway)
Tags:Three books to inspire, challenge and fill you up creatively this week:
True Vision: Authentic Art Journaling by LK Ludwig : I got to meet LK at Artfest last year and enjoyed her art just about as much as her personality. I ordered this book last night and am looking forward to some new ideas (it's been quite awhile since I picked up my art journal). After looking through the next book on the list (see below) I have some good ideas for backgrounds to try.
Acrylic Revolution by Nancy Reyner : This book is packed full with techniques for working with acrylic paint. I have been looking through it the last couple of evenings, dreaming about potentially doing some painting, and being really inspired to get out my paints and try something new and different (new + different for me).
Taking Flight: Inspiration And Techniques To Give Your Creative Spirit Wingsby Kelly Rae Roberts : I was lucky to see an advanced copy of this book on my recent girl's weekend and I can't wait to get my own. There are a bunch of mixed media how-to's as well as a lot of words (of which you know I am a fan - I like to know the thoughts behind the actions whenever possible). According to Kelly Rae, "this book isn't a traditional how-to book, but rather a book that dives deeper into telling our stories about how we came into the creative life - as a way to inspire others to stretch their wings and see what is possible for their own creativity."
Here's one of the Amazon reviews on this book:
I have two copies of Taking Flight to give away this week. To be entered into the drawing leave a comment below and let me know about your favorite creative technique is these days (it can be scrapbooking, mixed media, anything). Comments will be closed tomorrow (Wednesday) at 5pm Pacific and the winners announced shortly after.

Funnily enough Ali, I've been creating cards to sell at a local retailer and I too am starting to work more with paint as the mixed media medium is inspiring me so much these days. :D

I love using found objects as stamps. My favourite one at the moment is a bathmat. Because it's so large, I can slather it with paint or ink, and then I can easily stamp the stripes over my whole board. Because it's made out of soft rubber, some of the stripes 'squish' out more than the others, so I get some lovely variations.
So yes, my favourite technique these days, is the 'bathmat' technique.

I'm a huge Kelly Rae fan as well. I've purchased two of her prints as bday presents for my sisters, the next purchase will be for me! :)
I've been into mixed media lately. It's a variety of scrapbooking, paper cutting, and painting. I never, NEVER display any of my finished paintings because they've always been for my eyes only. Lately though, I don't care if others think they're not good, as long as I like them, I display them! :)

Hi Ali,
I am just starting to gain confidence as far as creating my own patterned papers for art journalling and scrapbooking. I have been painting, stamping and writing on 9x12 sheets of inexpensive watercolour paper and then I use strips or circles punched from these to adhere to other paper. I love to play with inks and paints and crayons. And, I was at the Early Years Centre with my little boy today and they had Crayola Pastel Crayons to play with. I need to get some of those, for sure!
Thanks for all the sharing you do.
Kelly

My favourite technique at the moment is graphite and liquid graphite on canvas paper. I love the smooth and flowing nature of graphite and the texture it creates on the canvas paper. Liquid graphite then gives the picture a depth and dimension to it. The last one I did was some calla lilies for my sister, it was delicate yet dimensional at the same time.
I have some pics on my blog if you are interested.

I have been wanting to try doing an art journal and/or painting. I have purchased some supplies (sketchbooks, paints, brushes, etc) but for some reason I'm afraid to start!

My current favorite technique is making messes with acrylic paint, because that's how I learn new things to do with it. I start out with no particular end in mind and just experiment. Sometimes, I'll use gel medium, tapes, masqueing media and things like that, but I always learn something. Then, next time I'm working in my art journal or on a scrapbook layout, I try to use what I learned.

I don't really have a favorite technique right now -- I guess just playing around with title ideas and how they can suggest the theme of the page with word play.

I love to paint on my pages, cards, mini books and other projects. If it's not paint, it's alchohol inks! I just love the unique, customized look!

My favourite technique at the moment is using torn book papers and collaging them to a canvas. Then I paint the canvas and use distress ink to highlight the very subtle texture that it produces.
