One Little Word 2009 & Giveaways
Tags:I am so excited to embark on a new word for 2009.
My word is nurture.
For me, especially with a new baby on the way within the next month or so, I have been thinking a lot about nurturing. It's such a soft, slow, gentle word.
There are many things in my life I would like to focus on nurturing this coming year. Our new baby girl. Simon and the transition to big brotherhood. My relationship with Chris. Photography. Patience. My business & this blog.
I am also going to be conscious of nurturing myself during this time of major transition in our lives.
There is something very special about this word for me. It represents slowing down, simplifying, and pinpointing what is really important to me in my life (not just the next 365 days). I am nervous and excited and so looking forward to what is to come.
The idea behind the one little word concept is to give yourself something to focus on throughout the year. As I stated in my newsletter back in January 2007, "A single word can be a powerful thing. It can be the ripple in the pond that changes everything. It can sharp and biting or rich and soft and slow."
Also from that same newsletter:
I can't wait to see all the words for 2009.
To celebrate the new year I have three very special giveaways - all directly related to this project. Two beautiful pieces of jewelry and one piece of art to celebrate your word.

My word is ENJOY. Just to remind myself to enjoy life and the every day things. Especially to enjoy the time I have with my husband as he will probably deploy again in 2010.

Hi Ali,
I love this idea! The first word that popped into my head when i heard of this was "GO".
My husband is in Iraq right now, he'll be home in a few months, but will leave again within the year. We have a young son as well. So I want to enjoy the time my husband is home as a family. So we will GO on vacation, we will GO to the zoo, we will just GO whenever we can, wherever we can.
Thanks for the great idea! --Fontaine

simplify. if you saw my messy house, you'd understand why! we are working to eliminate what we don't use/need and live with less.
happy new year ali!

I'm going with the idea of letting go. Living in the now, adjusting attitudes, not stressing about every detail, not letting old habits or feelings hold me back - I think this ideal applies to many facets of my life.

I haven't decided on one yet. Last year it was ACT and it really helped me to get things done. My sister surprised me with a Lisa Leonard necklace that had my word on it and I was so motivated every time I wore it! Will be thinking of my word!

I had a list of words for the year and couldn't decide on one until I realised they all encompassed one single word SIMPLIFY - To make less complex or complicated, to make plainer or easier. I am also adding organising and de-cluttering to the meaning for me this year. I feel I need to get back to teh basics, and hopefully this word will help :)

Hi Ali & Happy New Year!!
I have really enjoyed reading all the comments before mine... I am choosing "JUMP" for my new word. I am thinking about starting a new business and/or changing my career and need to "jump" to make change happen! "Dare" and "Explore" were runner-ups.

My word for the year is "possibilities". I just finished the year of Joy and I feel ready for new adventures. My subtitle this year is "alive with possibility". I am ready.

I am so happy that another little one will have such a great mom! My word is "enjoy" as in 'enjoy each moment'. As I age and my boys get ready for college, I realize how short our life is. Thanks for the inspiration. Keep up the hard work!

I picked the word (noun) "action". Not for the first thru 4th definition but for the 5th.
Action
a: a thing done : deed
b: the accomplishment of a thing usually over a period of time, in stages, or with the possibility of repetition
I am thinking there is going to be a lot of repetition to get a thing done, but I need to do that.

To preface my choice i want to say i have been a single parent for 23 years and have recently become an empty nester. While coming to grips with this i realized i'd lost myself while being mom, dad, granny, provider, friend, dance leader, driver ,chaperone etc. etc. etc.the last couple of months i've been thinking of redefining ME. so for 2009 my word is SELF.who am i? what do i like? what would i like to do? where would i like to go? you get the idea. now i have to go call my daughter.this is not easy. thanks,ms.cheryl

When I started thinking about my word for 2009 . . . "SEARCH" (or SEEK) was the first one that really stuck in my mind . . . such a broad term . . . but there are so many possiblities! I'm hoping to spend some time searching for God's will in my life, along with searching deep inside myself. On a lighter note I'm hoping to search out some truly unique photo opportunites in the New Year.

{Simplify} to make less complex or complicated. That pretty much says it all for me right now. {Embrace} was another word I considered, and was really having a hard time choosing between the two. Until today when I opened my journal and began writing. That's it, simplify. Whether its in my day to day routine, housekeeping, homeschooling, scrapbooking, or if its deeper.... more personal. Even on a spiritual level. Simplify. It's a good word for me. :)

My one little word for 2009 is FEED.
I love to cook, and I will of course continue to feed my family healthy and delicious meals every day in the coming year. But I want to expand my focus to include:
~ feeding others. Going forward, every Sunday night is Open Dinner at the Meltzers'. Please feel free to join us for the evening meal, served at six. Just let me know by noon if you're coming. You're all welcome!
~ feeding my creativity. Nature, art galleries, bookstores and blogs are regular sources of inspiration for me, and I will continue to drink from these wells; I would also like to take classes and mingle with more artists this year.
~ setting a lovely table. I noticed at Christmas that I tend to just spread out a tablecloth and put the food on it; I'd like to work on making beautiful table settings too.
~ food photography. Now that I have a fabulous macro lens, I want to use it! I am in awe of spectacular food photography, and want to develop skills in this field.
~ feeding my dreams, through savings and visualizations.
~ feeding my health, physical and mental. Stretching, hiking, breathing deeply, yoga, walking ... I will spend time every day on one or more of these.
I'm looking forward to a very well-fed year.

Ali,
I just found your blog in late November and I love it. The "one little word" is such a great idea. In 2009, I plan to focus on LOVE. Love for God; love for my DH; love for my 3 children; love for my extended family; love for my coworkers and students; love for myself, which includes loving myself enough to take care of me.
Thanks for the inspiration! I wish you the best with your new baby.

My word is breathe....I find that I am often soo busy that I forget to breathe. Have you ever taken a minute to realize that you are taking little shallow breathes? By breathing I calm down and listen to my heart and realize that once again another day has passed and I need to be more intentional (which is word #2, if I were to choose another word). Enjoy 2009 and Breathe.
