I lost a childhood friend to melanoma at age 34. She left behind a son, not even 18 mos and devastated friends and family. They celebrate her birthday (this Monday!) every year with a party and are extremely active in OutRun the Sun, http://outrunthesun.org/, which my family participated in for 3 years. I named my child, who was born 3 weeks prior to Pam's death after her, giving her the same middle name.

Hi Ali:
With so many charities, how do you choose a favorite? Usually because it hits close to home...i would love to begin with an awareness for children with seizure disorders. My son, Mac, has a seizure disorder and has suffered with it for 12 years now (since age of 5). I can tell you that there definitely is not enough awareness for this disease. So, with my very best efforts, i would love to see this become a charity some day; for the thousands of children affected.

The lady responsible for starting this special school was my first mom friend who also had a child just dx with Autism. I'm excited that parents in my area will have a place for their young children to learn when they are faced with the extra challenges that come with a disability.

My father in law passed away last weekend under the care of Hospice. I don't know how the people that work for them do it, I know it takes special people to do that kind of work where they experience death day to day. So here is a link for our local Hospice that took care of him in his final days. www.hovf.org

My favorite charity is Children's Hospital in Omaha. When my daughter was 7 days old we spent a week there trying to figure out what kind of infection she had that was making her temperature run so very high. The doctors and nurses there were WONDERFUL. When she was 4 months old, we had to go back for a kidney operation (related to the previous infection), and she's had tubes put in twice and holes in her eardrums patched and each and every time, everyone from the receptionists to the nurses and anesthesiologists and doctors have been incredible.

My favorite is charity is called necessity bags. They provide all the essentials a woman will need after mastectomy. The bags are about more than supplies. They are always delivered and the contents are explained by a cancer survivor, providing great support and easing nerves.

Beautiful clothes, beautiful charity.
My favourite charity is Smile Train. They allow children in third world countries to get cleft lip and palate repairs that they wouldn't receive otherwise. Without the repairs, these children cannot go to school or get a job. My son was born with a cleft lip and palate this year and obviously it has become a cause close to my heart.

My favorite charity is Fetal Hope Foundation. My twins were diagnosed with Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome in my 20th week of pregnancy and had to have surgery in utero to save their lives. They are now happy, healthy almost 3 year olds! Fetal Hope would have stepped in to pay for the surgery if my insurance wouldn't have. They are dedicated to the awareness of fetal distress syndromes and supporting families who have been diagnosed.

There are so many causes that I support because of different things that tug at my heartstrings. But one of my besties was just diagnosed with the early stages of MS, so right now I guess I'd say the Nat'l MS Society: http://www.nationalmssociety.org/

Wow! How cute! I can't beleive the post I just read! I too started learning to sew just over a year ago, and just in the last couple of weeks have been thinking of doing more with it. What's more is that my best friend's son, my Godson, was diagnosed with MLD, Metachromatic Leukodystrophy Disease, 3 years ago in September www.caringbridge.org/visit/logannobis. MLD is very similar to ALD, and he and his family have also made several trips to Duke and UNC. What a wonderful thing Brandy is doing for her friend's family at what is an unimaginably trying time. You have inspired me Brandy! I have already checked out your shop and will certainly spread the word! Thank you! My favorite charity is The Evanosky Foundation, www.evanoskyfoundation.org, which is involved in work with pediatric Leukodystrophies.
