Dear Kokuyo Dot-N-Roller I Will Miss You So
Tags:
Yes, it's pretty silly and a tad melodramatic to be sad at the loss of my favorite adhesive.
But when you work with adhesive as much as I do, and you finally find one that is reliable and feels darn good in your hand, it's a big bummer to have it go away. Yep, in case you haven't heard yet Kokuyo will not be distributing the Dot N Roller in the US anymore.
I am starting to test out some other permanent brands including the Tombow Mono, the Therm-O-Web Memory Tape Runner (I like many of their other adhesives), and the 3L Easy Runner (which I don't like as much because I found that I like dots rather than tabs). I am still resisting that Scotch ATG mainly because it seems so big and bulky, but I might just have to try it after reading so many positive reviews both in comments here and elsewhere. If you use the ATG do you use the red one or the yellow one? Does it go on like dots or tabs?
So what are you testing out or using now?

I have always used the Herma Dot Adhesive roller and have loved it because it is light weight and repositionable. I am addicted to it's little dots, the way they roll across the paper, and so easy to rub off if you change your mind!

You can also get permanent refills if needed. Though I am sad I never knew of the Kokuyo to be able to compare the two, it sounds like it was great and I missed out!
Love reading all the comments, so much good info! Thanks!

I say ATG. the red one is the smallest of the two. go for it, it is big, but it is lightweight and you get the hang of it really quickly.
the refills are cheap and you get a large roll. since you do alot of scrapbooking, i think that is a good choice for you. i also like the fact that there is no plastic dispenser or peices to throw away, so its a little greener.
the adhesive goes on in one continous line. i think its one of the best investments i have made, scrap-wise and we as a family use it all the time on my daughter's school projects.

I am so bummed! Upon your recommendation, Ali, I searched forever for the Dot n Roller. You see, I am severely adhesive challenged, and I realized this after trying nearly every product out there! Finally, I discovered I could order it from scrabook.com and I've been in heaven using it. My mistake was in only ordering a couple refills. This is the ONLY adhesive I've ever been successful with and now I am grieving. Is there any influence we can bear on the manufacturer?

Tombow - Love it, it's my main adhesive.
ATG gun - hate it! too bulky and not enough fine control.
Zip Dry Paper Glue - Love it! It's my heavy duty glue.
Red Line tape - Love it! It's my other heavy duty fave.
Good Luck!

I love, love, love my 3m tape guns! I have both the red and the yellow. The red one holds only 1/4" tape; the yellow one holds 1/2" tape, but you can add an adapter to get it to hold 1/4" tape. I use both interchangeably. They are definitely worth the investment!!

What??!! Say it isn't so!! I hadn't heard the sad news and am really bummed. I guess it is silly to be this upset over adhesive but I love my Dot N Roller! I am almost out and was going to buy more this weekend. Off to read others recommendations. Sigh... this will take a while to recover from.

I LOVE my ATG. I use yellow, and it works fine for all my applications. I even use it to make my own glue dots. If any hangs off the edge or you run it too long, you just rub it and it comes right off. Without leaving a mark! It's awesome for making mini albums, and you can get seriously big refills so you aren't playing the refill game all the time. I will say there is a HUGE price range with these puppies, so shop savvy.

I have 4 more Kokuyo refills in my stash & am already feeling the withdrawl. I got a Glue Glider as a gift it's a little pricey but not as big as an ATG. I still like the dots so I can get the adhesive off when I change my mind.
I did a survey of a new product yesterday at Tombow that will be released sometime next year - the more I used it the more I liked it & can't wait to buy one.... but what to do until then.... I'm missing my Kokuyo

I am pretty much hooked on Zip Dry!! I don't like to use it on pictures for that I use 3L but I love it for all paper to paper or paper to chipboard application.

Glue Glider Pro from Glue Arts is what I have just invested in. I am in LOVE! It is not to big to handle and the perma tac is wonderful for mini albums!
Just yesterday I found a store online that gives a good deal on refills. I do believe she also sells the glider but I already had one I didn't look close enough. http://zencart-template.com/cindy/index.php

I use the red ATG and I love the manueverability of it. It goes on in one long line just like tape. I found some great wholesale sites to buy the tape and even with shipping I am only paying about $2.28 per role. I'm not sure about the tape's acidic level so I do adhere my photos with the Hermafix but I really do love the ATG.

I was given the Glue Glider Pro as a replacement for the Kokouyo. So far so good but it is larger than most but not as large as the 3L. I was not a fan of the Mono one and the Scrapbook adhesive was good and easier to find than most.
Good luck.

LOVE my ATG! Resisted for a long time but now that I am into invitations its the only way to go! It comes out more like tape, one long piece but you have control over it. Get the red one. Its great for ribbon and smaller stuff. It also holds really well to bulikier stuff like chipboard and bazzil textures. HTH

LOVE LOVE LOVE my ATG gun! All the tapes fit either gun - just buy the Gold refills, those are the acid free kind. Its not at all bulky - just looks that way. It goes on smooth and the rolls last forever!

Feel your pain Ali. I was a fan of the Dot 'N Roller as well. I have switched the Red 714 ATG by 3M, much like Tombo adhesive a solid line of tape. The cost for adhesive can't be beat on the ATG at less than $3 for 30 yards. Most others are only 42 feet of adhesive, the 3M is like double the adhesive for the cost. ATG is not quite as forgiving as the Dot 'N Roller, but it can be picked up in the first few minutes. I am playing around with a few of the knock off refills too and they seem a little easier to adjust. Good luck and let us know what you end up with.

ATG! I have the red one. I've been using it for 4 years and haven't used another type of tape runner since. You just can't beat the price, the length of tape and the versatility.
The applicator is not heavy. It's easy to maneuver. I especially like is how if you lay a line of tape down and some hangs out from your paper or ribbon, you just use your finger to ball it up and remove it from your project.
It's only when you try to peel it off that you'll get tearing.
I find I can reposition things easily. Just use a pampered chef scrapper to separate the tape from the paper and it comes off without damaging the paper below.

My friend Lawren and I were joking that we couldn't believe that they weren't going to do the dot 'n roller anymore after you had converted so many people! I've been using the tombow dots roller this week - the original tape has been great, and it hasn't run out after a major scrapping spurt (for me!) which is also a bonus. Hoping that the refill will go as smoothly!

I love my ATG. Yes...it is big. No, it has not been a problem. Plus...I never loose that darned thing! I was a tried and true Tombow fan, but I was really having trouble with it on coated cardstock sheets and even some textures. I needed a good, strong adhesive, so this works well for me. I do keep the 3L adhesives around, too. I'm kind of an adhesive junkie, so I have LOTS Of options (like 2 cubbies of my Pier One Project Desk full) to choose from. 3L Scrapbook Adhesives does make a dot adhesive, however, it is repositionable. It is my FAVORITE repo adhesive! It sticks well AND removes easily, which is a difficult combo to find. I like the 3L tabs, but not as much as my ATG, simply because I'm a big tape fan (like you and your dots). Overall, you gotta find what you are comfortable with.

I totally get the size issue of the ATG gun. I felt the same way,but all my friends got one and loved them and so i bit the bullet and got one too. And i have to say i love it. It is not as heavy as it looks, my adhesive no longer gets lost on my desk and I doesn't have to be refilled near as much. Plus it hold really well. I ran out of tape the oter day and tryed to use up some old adhesive i had left over and finally gave up and went to the store to buy more tape for my gun. I won't go back, my gun is now a permanet part of my craft space!
