art in the everyday

Swing_1

Looking through a couple different magazines lately I noticed Banana Republic's new campaign: Find the Art in the Everyday. Clicking on that link takes you to a cool little movie.

I so believe in this concept. There is art in the everyday. There is beauty in the everday. Even in the midst of chaos, uncertainty, despair.

You can be the beauty today: donate.

Hi Ali! Thanks for putting a link up to the Red Cross for donations. My dad has been deployed to Houston, TX right outside of Louisiana as a FEMA employee. He's worked other disasters, huricanes, and by my dad's account, the FEMA workers are frustrated because they have been there since SUNDAY and still haven't been given direction as to where and what they should be doing. They aren't getting any answers and feel completely helpless and frustrated. They can't get to the people who need them and the situation is getting worse everyday. I wrote a little about it in my blog yesterday kellylibby.typepad.com if you'd like to check it out.
Encouraging the people who read your blog everyday to contribute is great!
I would also encourage everybody to call their congressional representative and 2 Senators to tell them what you think. I called because I believe the relief efforts by the government are too slow and need to be increased. We all have opinions and this is something small we can do. I feel it is my obligation to call my elected officials and demand accountability.... If you don't know who your senator and congressperson is then you can look it up on www.senate.gov . When calling simply state your name and why you are calling. Say you want a written response back and leave your mailing address along with your comments. This is common practice at congressional offices. I used to work at one and took constituent comments all day, every day!
Secondly, if you can, I suggest calling the White House at #202-456-1111.
Best of luck with your calls!

On Renee Pearson's blog she's been talking about Good Design (or Well Designed) things and asking us to look for them in our lives. As I was flipping through my O magazine (Sept page 9) this morning I came across this Banana Republic Ad of a girl taking a snapshot of what looks like the trees or the skyline in the horizon. The ad is from the Perspective of her friend in the grass - gazing at her, the park, the city. She is finding her art, he is finding his art - all in that everyday moment.
But Miss Renee is asking me to go a step further and I study the design. And so I notice (for the first time these days) the way his knee follows the height line of the buildings. I notice how the shadow of the tree falls to the top of the Type on the right that says "Banana Republic". How the white space on the right side of the tree trunk falls in line directly with the Type beneath that reads "FindtheArtintheEveryday.com" It is a very well designed photo. A very well designed ad. And it is all about something so simple and well thought out. Art in the Everyday.
    Yes. Of course.

Ali, thanks for drawing attention to what others can do for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Biloxi, Mississippi, is my hometown, and, let me just say that, while I tried to read your friend's blog with the updates, I could not, not right now, because I just can't cry any more right now. My dh, children and i just moved from central Mississippi last year for his job, but my heart is forever in Mississippi, and it is a very heavy heart now. Thanks again.

thanks for reminding us of this. it's important to be able to find the beauty. i had a friend who's baby was born on sept. 11, 2001. it was a nice reminder that there was beauty still to be had in an otherwise terrible world. this is the same.
there are many many charities to donate to...many news stations have links to various charities that are providing help to those affected by the recent disaster.

As everyone is thinking about how to help the victims of Katrina, I have heard of a scrapbook store, here in Ohio who is having a rummage sale to raise money to send to the Red Cross. The store is called Scraptacular in Sheffield. I'm not sure of all the details just yet but I am excited to be able to help in any way I can. We don't have alot of money to give but I can sure find some extra to donate.
Maybe someone else will find creative ways to give also.
